Our Kids

We have children of various ages, from young babies through to early teens. More families means more friends, both for the social butterflies and the quieter types.

Our Parents

Our parents are a diversely talented lot with many skills to share. Permaculture & gardening, cooking, art & design, IT, crafts of various types and more!

Our Space

Close to buses, plenty of free parking, an enclosed playground and heated cottage with Taroona Park, community gardens & the beach nearby.  Perfect for all occasions!

So what is Natural Learning?

Also known as unschooling, child-led learning, life-learning & autodidactism, amongst many other terms, it is a philosophy that puts the child in the driver’s seat of their education.  It is about creating a rich life, full of excitement & opportunities rather than memorising information simply to pass tests.  It is learning as humans always have, but it gained popularity as a viable alternative to school thanks to the work of John Holt & Patrick Farenga of ‘Growing without Schooling‘.

We meet weekly in Taroona, between Hobart & Kingston.  Our families come together from a diverse range of backgrounds & locations to socialise and enjoy shared adventures.  Beyond that, our aim is to create a sense of community & share our skills and resources to make the day-to-day a little easier.

Keep reading below for more information about our co-op.  Please enjoy your stay 🙂

Our Vision

WHAT'S OUR GOAL
We provide a social and networking community for home educating / unschooling families in & around Hobart.

It is a co-operative, so we value all opinions equally & ask that parents share the load in the running of co-op each week.

We welcome new families anytime & encourage families to attend regularly so we can build strong bonds & really get to know one another.

Our vision is to build a community that can help each other outside of co-op with benefits like swapping child care, organising bulk food purchases, etc.

See the info page under “About Us” if you’d like to learn more about joining the group.

Activities

THINGS TO DO

playground 1

Play
We believe strongly in letting kids learn through play.  We have a fantastic location within a fenced playground, adjacent to a field for the kids to run freely.  Role-play games amongst the trees have been particularly popular with our older kids.  We’re also within walking distance to the local skate park & Taroona beach which is perfect in the warmer months.  Near the skate park is a fire pit that is lovely to gather around on cooler days to toast marshmallows, bake apples & watch the kids create shelters in the bush.  We also have a range of toys and puzzles available for quiet games in the cottage.

art cottage

Create

For those who prefer quieter activities, we have a range of art & craft supplies available each week in the cottage for your little artists.

books

Read
We have a rotating library of children’s books available in the cottage each week.  You’re welcome to take books home with you and swap them for others you may no longer need.

acroyoga workshop

Workshops

Whilst the kids love plenty of time to hang with their friends, we encourage parents to organize workshops throughout the year.

Past workshops have included bread-making, solstice lanterns, hand-churned ice-cream, Yoga Bugs kids yoga, Acroyoga with Threads Tasmania (twice, because it was such great fun), Tasmanian Aboriginal Heritage, wildlife rescuers complete with furry friends and cartooning with Bradfield Dumpleton.

We have plenty of space for outdoor activities & can hire the adjacent Taroona Community Hall if we need a larger indoor space.
